A Conspiracy of Ravens’ origin dates back to a songwriting retreat that the band’s core five members embarked on in August 2023. Over a long weekend in cabins at the Trine State Recreation Area (outside Pokagon State Park), the band wrote new songs and finished works in progress.
The album’s recording sessions took place over 16 months, from May ’24 through September ’25. Band member Matt Kelley said, “Many of the songs on our previous albums had a real ‘bang it out, live-on-the-floor’ vibe—which we love, of course. With this fifth album, we sought to slow the process down to really craft each recording, to really orchestrate each part. We were diligent, meticulous and intentional at every stage, and are thrilled with the ways this album is distinct and singular in our recorded material to date. All while remaining very Trainhopper-y, of course.”
The Trainhoppers are Casey Stansifer (bass, guitar), Chris Dodds (vocals, guitar, keyboards, harmonica, accordion), Dan Smyth (vocals, guitar, keyboards), Matt Kelley (guitar, mandolin) and Phil Potts (vocals, guitar, keyboards).
The album was recorded and mixed with Off the Cuff’s proprietor, Jason Davis. Davis also plays drums and percussion on the album. They are joined on the record by performing drummer Daniel Hogan and frequent collaborator Cassie Beer (vocals). Guest musicians include Daniel Vaides (piano on “Surprise Yourself”) and Ed Renz (clarinet on “Down at the Pretty Bodega”). One Lucky Guitar’s Jonathan Barker created the album cover.
The Legendary Trainhoppers have previously released Ramble On (2006), Family Tree (2016), Let It Breathe (2017) and Hard Times (2020).
The band’s music is available on streaming platforms, and the band can be found at TheTrainhoppers.com, @TheTrainhoppers on Instagram, and /trainhoppers on Facebook.
